Yasmina of Cairo in Gloucestershire

8 hours weekend training that covers many styles of Egyptian dancing

From her bio: Yasmina, sometimes known as 'The English Rose of Cairo', has over twenty-five years of experience in the field of Egyptian oriental dance as a performer, teacher and choreographer. Originally from the UK she spent many years travelling and dancing her way around the Middle East before settling in Cairo in 1995. Here she performed with her orchestra for eight consecutive years, building a reputation as one of the city's best-loved dancers, and appearing at major Cairo venues such as Meridien Heliopolis, Safir, Pyramisa and the Semiramis Intercontinental hotels, the Nile Maxime, Tivoli Heliopolis, as well as hundreds of weddings and parties in Cairo and around Egypt. A long-time student of Raqia Hassan, as well as other Egyptian master teachers, Yasmina has spent the past decade teaching and performing at sell-out workshops and festivals worldwide, and developing her own unique style

The Programme

Don't Miss it. Limited spaces available! Spaces are only reserved upon completion of full payment.

Workshop 1: Saturday 24th of November     10am -12 pm Modern Egyptian Technique and combinations, Yasmina-style. All levels

Yasmina will break down her basic technique including emphasis on posture, muscle engagement and weight change, as well as basic transitions between steps to build up a fluid vocabulary.

Workshop 2: Saturday 24th of November       1pm -3pm ‘Oriental de-construction’: How to take steps apart and put them together again in different ways. (Intermediate and advanced)

A useful class for both teachers and intermediate to advanced dancers wanting to take what they’ve learned to a new level, exploring alternative ways to express certain movements and where they come from, layering and creating your own combinations.

Workshop 3: Sunday 25th of November   11.00am -1pm ‘Anything goes’ shaabi : new from the streets of Cairo!

A quirky mix of street and traditional shaabi, about as far from elegant oriental as you can get! Full-on street shaabi maharaganat style might be going a little far for some people…Yasmina looks at how to borrow from its moves to jazz up your shaabi technique!

Workshop 4: Sunday 25th of Nov  2pm - 4pm          ‘Explore your inner diva’: style, interpretation and moves inspired by classic dancers of the Egyptian black and white movie era.

Do you love the style of Samia Gamal, Naima Akef and Kitty? Yasmina will take you through some of their classic moves and explore ways to give your golden era interpretation real drama and a vintage feel.
